About this tour

Step into a city where two continents meet and twenty centuries of empires layer one on top of the other. Over three carefully curated days, you’ll wander the cool marble of Hagia Sophia, sip tulip-glass tea in hidden Sultanahmet courtyards, lose yourself among the lanterns of the Grand Bazaar, and watch the call to prayer roll over the Bosphorus from the deck of a private cruise.

This is Istanbul as a luxury traveler should experience it: skip-the-line entrances at every monument, an exceptional English-speaking guide who knows the back lanes of the old city as well as the textbooks, hand-picked restaurants for lunch and a candle-lit Turkish dinner, and door-to-door private transfers from your hotel. Small group, slow pace, real moments — the Istanbul that lingers long after you’ve gone home.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Old City: Byzantium & the Sultans

Your guide collects you from your hotel after breakfast for a slow, immersive walk through Sultanahmet. We begin at Hagia Sophia, where Justinian's golden mosaics still glimmer high above. From there it is a short walk across the old hippodrome to Topkapı Palace, the seat of the Ottoman sultans — we'll spend extra time in the Harem and the Imperial Treasury. Lunch is reserved at a discreet rooftop restaurant overlooking the Sea of Marmara. The afternoon brings the Blue Mosque and the underground Basilica Cistern. We close the day with a candlelit Turkish dinner in a restored Ottoman house in Sultanahmet.

Day 2 — Bazaars, Spices & the Bosphorus at Sunset

Today is dedicated to Istanbul's senses. Mid-morning we step into the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's oldest covered markets, with private introductions to a fourth-generation carpet dealer and a master of çini ceramics. We continue across the Galata Bridge to the Spice Bazaar, with tastings of saffron, Turkish delight and freshly milled coffee. After a relaxed lunch in Karaköy, you have free time to rest at your hotel. As the light softens, we board a private Bosphorus cruise, gliding between Europe and Asia past Ottoman palaces and timber yalı mansions, returning to harbor as the city begins to glow.

Day 3 — Galata, Pera & a Farewell to the City

We cross the Golden Horn to the elegant Pera district. After Turkish coffee in a historic café, we climb the Galata Tower for sweeping 360° views of the old city and the Bosphorus. The morning continues with a guided walk down İstiklal Avenue, past art nouveau passages, antique tram lines and Pera Palace Hotel — where Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express. After a farewell lunch of Turkish meze and grilled fish, we transfer you back to your hotel or onward to Istanbul Airport, mind full of minarets and the smell of grilled chestnuts on the wind.

Frequently asked questions

April to early June and September to early November are ideal — long daylight hours, mild Mediterranean weather, and fewer crowds at the major monuments. July and August can be hot and busy. December and January are cool and atmospheric, often with snow on the domes.

The route involves cobblestones, occasional stairs (notably at Topkapı Palace, Galata Tower and the Basilica Cistern), and walking distances of two to four kilometers per day. We can adapt the pace and arrange private vehicles between sites for guests who prefer reduced walking — please let us know in advance.

Modest dress is expected: shoulders covered for everyone, knees covered, and a head scarf for women (which we provide). Shoes are removed inside; we recommend slip-on footwear. Hagia Sophia, since 2020, also follows mosque dress code.

Tipping is appreciated but never required. As a guideline, 10–15% of the tour cost split between your guide and driver is customary in Türkiye for excellent service.
